With the Active Tag NFC in the SX610, by tapping an NFC-capable smart device to the camera, it will now automatically begin transferring images to the smart device.

Would definitely recommend :-)
I have one large reservation, which is that indoor pictures using the flash do not come out well for me. I usually take two shots, with and without flash, and unless it is very dark the one without always looks better, even with the element of blur caused by a longer hand-held exposure. This is a testament to the low-light capabilities of the camera, but why is so difficult to make an automatic flash that doesn't over-expose the subject while plunging the background into deep gloom?
I actually like the pop-up element of the flash because it's very simple to explain when you're getting someone else to take your picture (no selfies for me!)
A smaller gripe is that setting up any interaction with the Canon phone app over wifi is fiddly, though you get used to it in the end. It is probably a mistake to introduce the camera to your home wifi network because it delays establishing a link via the camera's own wifi the next time you're not at home.
Geotagging of pictures works fine if you remember to start the logging process on the phone app before you shoot, and to turn it off afterwards. If you leave it running your phone battery will drain in a couple of hours.
It has the usual easy set up of date, time, location and a very short user guide of 8 pages. The short guide gives a web address (http://www.canon.com/icpd/), which you can use to download the full 160-page guide! When you turn the camera on pressing the “MENU” button takes you to two tool tabs which you can scroll through to set things up.
Upon taking delivery of the camera I travelled off on a 4-night city break to Florence, Italy. I had downloaded the full user guide to my MacBook and my iPod, but did not plan to carry either of these devices to Italy. So I downloaded the ‘guide to my iPhone. I used this to clarify functionality about the camera in a reasonably quick way. The user guide has the page numbers along the bottom of the page and section headings so I could navigate to a particular section reasonably quickly.
Having used the camera intensively in the last few weeks I would say the key to navigating around it depend on getting familiar with the “FUNC.SET” button and the “MENU” button. I made a few errors in my selection but was able to “backtrack” and rectify my error.
I am not a professional photographer. I do like to read the guide and then “have a go” at what it suggests – there is nothing to lose and the “delete” option is there via the green playback arrow coupled with the “MENU” “erase” option. The camera is easy to handle but I always use the strap just in case I drop it.
The first 27 pages of the guide are the “usual suspects” of setting up red eye correction, volume control, putting blink detection on or off etc.Read more ›
