This camera is simply brilliant if you're looking for a nice point-and-shoot camera. I purchased this specific one so I could use it for when I went on Safari in Africa a couple of months ago, and boy did it do the job. The zoom is excellent and the camera still maintains its crisp 20.2MP quality right up to the 18x optical zoom. Once you go beyond that zoom, the quality will start to fade away but that's obviously expected. The battery lasts long enough for me so don't panic because it can easily get you through a day or two of heavy photography. As for filming, I haven't done a lot of it on this camera but from what I've used, the video and sound quality are good. It's worth buying a case for this camera since it's light and small and could be damaged if subjected to any harsh force. All in all, I was pleased with the purchase, and recommend to anyone looking for a camera that loads up quick and can take crisp photographs.

I've been a 'smartphone photographer' for a while and being an android user most phone cameras are of poor quality. I wanted a camera that was small and handy but that let me send pictures to my phone and device for quick uploading to social media. So far this camera has been perfect. Setting up the wifi connection was a bit tricky at first (as I didn't know how and the manual was unhelpful) but once I found the canon connect app in a store and made the first connection it was a breeze. I'm sure there are faster more immediate technologies out there but I'm reasonably technically minded so working it out wasn't a big issue. Image quality is great even when compression kicks in from transferring to my device but that is to be expected and is fit for my purposes. Picture attached has gone through compression.

Bought for my daughter as an upgrade. Takes fantastic photos as you'd expect from Canon and also includes some great features for such a small camera, including a better than average zoom. Battery life is impressive, although I did buy a spare (slightly smaller capacity Duracell) as a backup for long days out etc. For people that just want a point and click with decent zoom, and aren't worried about having a manual mode, this is ideal.

Lovely little pocket camera, bought in a hurry to take on holiday to replace a clunky, heavy and malfunctioning older camera. This new one is just what I wanted, together with the memory card I took over 300 pictures on one battery charge, zoom was amazing, simple to use, flash indicator - red arrow on screen - so you could choose to use or not with the neat little pop up flash that you just popped back down if you didn't want to use it. The zoom is excellent, and for photographing fine detail on my craft work, that I do. It's light-weight, just slips into my pocket or bag, well what more can I say. If you want a no-frills, easy to use, pocket camera that gives good results then I'd recommend this one. Only thing is that I wish I'd brought a little carry bag to put it in at the same time.

Love love love! I'm an amateur photographer and I've wanted a little compact camera to keep in my bag for those on the go shots for a long time, and this is perfect. It's aesthetically beautiful, has the best focus ever, loads of different settings, I could talk forever about it!

Would definitely recommend :-)

I like this camera in most respects. Daylight pictures look great, the video quality is good and the sound on movie clips better than expected. I like the fact that you can zoom while taking videos (my previous compact cameras could not), but with no damping at the start and end of the zoom it does looks unprofessional.

I have one large reservation, which is that indoor pictures using the flash do not come out well for me. I usually take two shots, with and without flash, and unless it is very dark the one without always looks better, even with the element of blur caused by a longer hand-held exposure. This is a testament to the low-light capabilities of the camera, but why is so difficult to make an automatic flash that doesn't over-expose the subject while plunging the background into deep gloom?

I actually like the pop-up element of the flash because it's very simple to explain when you're getting someone else to take your picture (no selfies for me!)

A smaller gripe is that setting up any interaction with the Canon phone app over wifi is fiddly, though you get used to it in the end. It is probably a mistake to introduce the camera to your home wifi network because it delays establishing a link via the camera's own wifi the next time you're not at home.

Geotagging of pictures works fine if you remember to start the logging process on the phone app before you shoot, and to turn it off afterwards. If you leave it running your phone battery will drain in a couple of hours.

The Canon “PowerShot” SX610 HS is a versatile compact camera. It came boxed up with a battery, charger and strap. You need to charge the battery and also supply an SD card.

It has the usual easy set up of date, time, location and a very short user guide of 8 pages. The short guide gives a web address (http://www.canon.com/icpd/), which you can use to download the full 160-page guide! When you turn the camera on pressing the “MENU” button takes you to two tool tabs which you can scroll through to set things up.

Upon taking delivery of the camera I travelled off on a 4-night city break to Florence, Italy. I had downloaded the full user guide to my MacBook and my iPod, but did not plan to carry either of these devices to Italy. So I downloaded the ‘guide to my iPhone. I used this to clarify functionality about the camera in a reasonably quick way. The user guide has the page numbers along the bottom of the page and section headings so I could navigate to a particular section reasonably quickly.

Having used the camera intensively in the last few weeks I would say the key to navigating around it depend on getting familiar with the “FUNC.SET” button and the “MENU” button. I made a few errors in my selection but was able to “backtrack” and rectify my error.

I am not a professional photographer. I do like to read the guide and then “have a go” at what it suggests – there is nothing to lose and the “delete” option is there via the green playback arrow coupled with the “MENU” “erase” option. The camera is easy to handle but I always use the strap just in case I drop it.

The first 27 pages of the guide are the “usual suspects” of setting up red eye correction, volume control, putting blink detection on or off etc.
